Bhai Dooj 2026 in the USA: Date, Tilak Time for US Cities and the Sibling Houses in Your Chart

Bhai Dooj closes the five days of Deepavali, and if you live in the US or Canada there's one thing to know before you call your brother: your date is one day earlier than India's this year. Here's why, the tilak time for your city, and a little astrology for siblings.

When is Bhai Dooj 2026?

• India: Wednesday, November 11, 2026

Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya, Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta) falls on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, the 2nd lunar day of the waxing Moon, and the tilak is applied in aparahna, the fourth of the five equal parts of the day between sunrise and sunset. Dwitiya begins when the Moon moves 12° ahead of the Sun and ends at 24°. Computing that with the NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris (the same engine behind our free Vedic birth chart):

In North America, Dwitiya covers the whole of Tuesday afternoon and is over before sunrise on Wednesday, so Tuesday, November 10 is Bhai Dooj. In India, Dwitiya only starts at 2 PM on Tuesday and holds through Wednesday afternoon, so India keeps it on the 11th. Drik Panchang gives the same: Tuesday, November 10 for New York and Wednesday, November 11 for New Delhi.

If your family in India calls you on Wednesday, you can do the tilak on video together. Doing it on your own local date is perfectly correct.

Our New York window matches Drik Panchang's 12:40 PM to 2:41 PM, and our New Delhi window matches its 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM within a minute. It's a weekday afternoon, so if work gets in the way, any time on Tuesday while Dwitiya runs is still Bhai Dooj; the afternoon is simply the preferred window.

How to do Bhai Dooj

1. Sisters prepare a thali with roli or kumkum, rice (akshat), a diya, sweets and a dry coconut or fruit.
2. Seat your brother facing north or east, apply the tilak, place a few grains of rice on it, do aarti and offer sweets.
3. Many families tie a sacred thread and pray for the brother's long life, remembering Yamuna feeding her brother Yama on this day; Yama blessed every brother who visits his sister on Dwitiya.
4. Brothers give a gift and a promise of protection, and the two share a meal, ideally one the sister cooked.
5. Far apart? A video-call tilak is now a very real tradition in the diaspora. Mail the roli and a rakhi-style thread ahead.

The astrology of siblings
