Guna Milan Explained: How Ashtakoota Compatibility Scores 36 Points

By Miss Astroglow ยท October 14, 2026 ยท 6 min read

When two families in India begin talking about marriage, one of the first things they often ask for is the couple's guna milan score, the famous "out of 36". It sounds mysterious, but it is actually a very logical system. Once you understand the eight factors behind it, you can read a score like an astrologer does: as a map of strengths and growth areas, not a pass/fail exam.

You can calculate yours in seconds with the free compatibility calculator. Here is what it is actually measuring.

What is Ashtakoota guna milan?

Ashta means eight and koota means aspect or group. Ashtakoota matching compares eight factors between two people, each worth a different number of points (gunas). The weights rise from 1 to 8, which is why they add up to 36:

#KootaMax pointsWhat it looks at
1Varna1Spiritual temperament and ego
2Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence
3Tara3Birth-star harmony, health and fortune
4Yoni4Physical and sexual compatibility
5Graha Maitri5Mental friendship between Moon-sign lords
6Gana6Temperament (divine, human, rakshasa)
7Bhakoot7Emotional bond, family welfare, prosperity
8Nadi8Constitution, health and progeny
Total36

Every factor is calculated from just two things for each person: their Moon sign and their Moon nakshatra, both in the sidereal zodiac. That is why you need accurate birth details. If you are unsure what those are for you, start with the nakshatra calculator or read Moon sign vs Sun sign.

The eight kootas, one by one

1. Varna (1 point)

The twelve signs are grouped into four varnas by element: water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as Brahmin, fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) as Kshatriya, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as Vaishya and air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as Shudra. Traditionally the point is given when the groom's varna is equal to or higher than the bride's. In modern terms, think of it as how your spiritual and work temperaments sit together. It is worth only one point for a reason.

2. Vashya (2 points)

Each sign belongs to a vashya group: human, quadruped, water-dwelling, wild (Leo) or insect (Scorpio). Vashya measures natural influence and attraction, whether one partner is drawn to the other and how power flows. Same group scores full points; some groups partly control others.

3. Tara (3 points)

Count the nakshatras from one partner's birth star to the other's, divide by nine, and look at the remainder. Remainders of 3, 5 and 7 (Vipat, Pratyak and Vadha taras) are considered unfavourable; the rest are favourable. It is checked both ways, and each direction that is favourable earns 1.5 points. Tara speaks to wellbeing and luck in the relationship.

4. Yoni (4 points)

Each of the 27 nakshatras is linked to an animal: horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, mongoose and lion. Same animal gives 4 points; friendly animals score high; natural enemies (cat and rat, snake and mongoose, cow and tiger, for example) score 0. Yoni describes physical chemistry and intimacy.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points)

Each Moon sign has a ruling planet. Graha Maitri asks whether those two planets are friends, neutral or enemies by classical rules. If your Moon signs are both ruled by Venus (Taurus and Libra), you score full points. This koota describes mental compatibility: do you naturally understand each other's way of thinking?

6. Gana (6 points)

Every nakshatra has a gana, or temperament:

Same gana gives 6 points. Deva and Manushya together score well. Rakshasa paired with Deva traditionally scores 0 or close to it, because the two styles clash. "Rakshasa" sounds scary, but it simply means a forceful nature; many brilliant leaders have it.

7. Bhakoot (7 points)

Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. Count from one Moon sign to the other and back. When the signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, Bhakoot scores 0, called Bhakoot dosha. All other combinations score the full 7. Bhakoot is about emotional connection, family harmony and shared prosperity, which is why it carries heavy weight.

8. Nadi (8 points)

The 27 nakshatras are divided into three nadis: Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha), echoing the three doshas of Ayurveda. Different nadis score 8; the same nadi scores 0, called Nadi dosha. Traditionally it is linked to health and children, which is why it is the single most weighted koota.

What is a good guna milan score?

The common traditional guidance is:

ScoreTraditional reading
Below 18Not recommended without deeper chart analysis
18 to 24Acceptable, an average match
25 to 32Very good
33 to 36Excellent, though rare

Here is what I want you to remember, though: the number is a starting point, not a verdict. Plenty of loving, lifelong couples have scores around 18 to 20, and some 30+ matches struggle. Ashtakoota compares only the two Moons. It does not look at the 7th house of marriage, Venus, the dasha periods both people are running, or Mars placements (Mangal dosha).

Doshas and their cancellations

Nadi and Bhakoot doshas get the most attention because they wipe out 8 and 7 points. Classical texts also list cancellations (parihara). For example, Nadi dosha is commonly considered cancelled when both partners share the same Moon sign but have different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different Moon signs. Bhakoot dosha is commonly considered cancelled when the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet or are friends.

Different traditions apply these exceptions differently, and our free tool deliberately shows you the raw score without applying them, so you can see every koota honestly. A personal reading looks at all of this together.

Where guna milan fits in a full compatibility reading

A thorough Vedic match looks at:

  1. Ashtakoota guna milan for the emotional and temperamental baseline.
  2. Mangal dosha (Mars in certain houses) in both charts.
  3. The 7th house and its lord, and Venus, for each person's marriage pattern.
  4. Dasha timing, to see whether both people are entering supportive or challenging periods.
  5. Navamsa (D9), the divisional chart of marriage.

Think of guna milan as the first chapter. It tells you where you click easily and where you will need patience. Both are useful to know.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas are needed for marriage?

Traditionally at least 18 out of 36. Most astrologers also examine doshas, Mangal dosha and both full charts before advising on a match.

What happens if Nadi dosha is present?

The Nadi koota scores 0 of 8. Traditional texts list several cancellations, and many astrologers consider the whole chart before treating it as a problem.

Can guna milan be done with just names?

Some sites use name-based matching, but authentic Ashtakoota uses the Moon sign and nakshatra calculated from birth date, time and place.

Does the order of partners matter?

Yes, slightly. Classical rules treat Varna, Vashya and Gana with a groom and bride role. Enter the groom-role partner first for traditional results.

Is a 36/36 match perfect?

It is rare and very harmonious on paper, but no number guarantees a happy relationship. Respect and communication still do the real work.
