Mercury and Venus Retrograde Oct-Nov 2026 in Vedic Astrology: Dates and Effects by Moon Sign

Right now two personal planets are retrograde at once: Venus (love, money, beauty, comforts) and Mercury (communication, contracts, trade, technology). In the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac both are moving backwards through Libra, and Venus even slips back into Virgo, its sign of debilitation, right over Dhanteras and Diwali.

Mercury and Venus retrograde 2026: the key dates

Station times are the same instant everywhere; only the calendar date shifts. That's why US calendars say both planets turn direct on November 13, while Indian panchangs show Venus turning direct on November 14. The station dates also match tropical (Western) calendars, which list Mercury retrograde as Oct 24 to Nov 13 and Venus as Oct 3 to Nov 14 UTC. Only the sign names differ: the Western zodiac puts this loop in Scorpio, the sidereal zodiac in Libra and Virgo.

The shadow. Mercury first crossed the degree where it will turn direct on about October 4, and won't clear the degree where it turned retrograde until about November 30. For Venus the shadow runs from about August 31 to December 15. Shadow periods are a Western idea rather than a classical Vedic one, but they're a useful reminder that things settle gradually.

What does a retrograde planet mean in Vedic astrology?

A planet never actually moves backwards. Mercury and Venus orbit inside Earth's orbit, and when one of them overtakes us on the inside lane it appears to slide backwards against the stars for a few weeks. In Jyotish a retrograde planet is called vakri. Classical texts don't treat it as simply "bad". A retrograde planet is closer to Earth and brighter, and it gains cheshta bala (motional strength). What it changes is the style of results: inward, repeated, delayed, revisited.

So think re-: review, revise, reconnect, renegotiate, return. Old matters come back to be finished.

Venus retrograde in Libra and Virgo: love, money and beauty under review

Libra is Venus's own sign, so for most of October Venus is strong but turned inward. Around October 18 to 28 it was also combust (within about 8° of the Sun), which is when exes, old money questions and "do I still want this?" feelings tend to surface.

Then on November 5 (US) / November 6 (India) Venus backs into Virgo, where it is debilitated (neecha), and turns direct there at 28°38' Virgo on November 13/14. That's Dhanteras (November 6) and Diwali (November 8) with a retrograde, debilitated Venus. There's a classical view that a debilitated planet that is retrograde behaves more like an exalted one, so this is far from a disaster. Practically:

• Relationships: good for honest conversations, repairing old bonds and clarifying what you value. Less ideal for impulsive new commitments, engagements or reunions you'd regret.
• Money and purchases: traditional Dhanteras buying (a coin, a utensil) is a ritual and is generally kept. Big luxury purchases, cosmetic procedures and expensive makeovers are better after November 13/14, ideally after Venus is back in Libra on November 22.
• Creative work: brilliant for editing, redesigning and finishing old projects.

Mercury retrograde in Libra: words, deals and devices

Mercury turns retrograde at 26°45' Libra in Vishakha and walks back into Swati before turning direct. It is combust (within about 12° of the Sun, the orb for a retrograde Mercury) from about October 29 to November 10, with the exact Sun-Mercury meeting on November 4.

• Contracts and big decisions: read the fine print twice. If you can, sign major contracts after November 13. If you can't wait, double-check names, numbers and dates.
