Navamsa Chart (D9) Explained: How to Read It for Marriage and Inner Strength
Ask any Vedic astrologer which chart they look at after your birth chart, and most will say the Navamsa, or D9. If the main chart (the Rashi or D1) is the tree, the Navamsa is often called the fruit: it shows what the promises of your birth chart actually ripen into, especially in marriage and in the second half of life.
This guide explains what the Navamsa is, how it is calculated, and the few things to look at first, without needing a lifetime of study.
What is the Navamsa chart?
"Navamsa" means "ninth part". Each of the 12 signs is 30 degrees wide, and the Navamsa divides every sign into nine equal parts of 3°20'. That gives 108 small divisions around the zodiac, and each one is mapped to a sign. The Navamsa chart is simply your planets and ascendant placed in the signs of those ninth parts.
There's a lovely link here with the nakshatras: the 27 nakshatras each have 4 quarters (padas) of 3°20', which is also 108 divisions. So every nakshatra pada is exactly one navamsa. If you know your Moon's nakshatra and pada, you already know your Moon's Navamsa sign. You can find both with the nakshatra calculator.
How the Navamsa is calculated
The counting starts from a different sign depending on the element of the sign a planet is in:
| Planet's sign (element) | First navamsa starts from |
|---|---|
| Aries, Leo, Sagittarius (fire) | Aries |
| Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn (earth) | Capricorn |
| Gemini, Libra, Aquarius (air) | Libra |
| Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces (water) | Cancer |
Then you count forward one sign for every 3°20'. For example, a planet at 8° Taurus is in the third navamsa of Taurus (6°40' to 10°). Taurus starts from Capricorn, so the third navamsa is Pisces. That planet's Navamsa sign is Pisces.
You'll also see the same rule written another way: movable signs start from themselves, fixed signs from the 9th sign, and dual signs from the 5th. Both give the same answer.
Why your birth time matters even more here
The Navamsa ascendant changes about nine times as fast as the main ascendant. A birth-chart Lagna lasts around two hours on average, so a Navamsa Lagna lasts only about 13 minutes. If your birth time is a guess, treat the Navamsa ascendant and its houses with caution. Planet positions in the Navamsa (except the fast-moving Moon near a boundary) are much more stable, so those are still useful. Not sure of your main Lagna yet? Vargottama: when a planet is in the same sign twice
A planet that occupies the same sign in the birth chart and in the Navamsa is called vargottama. Classical texts treat it as a source of strength and consistency: what the planet promises in the birth chart, it tends to deliver.
Vargottama happens in the first navamsa of movable signs, the fifth (middle) navamsa of fixed signs, and the ninth (last) navamsa of dual signs. A vargottama Lagna or Moon is often said to give a steady, recognisable personality, someone who is "the same inside and out".
The four things to look at first
You don't need to read every house of the D9 to get value from it. Most astrologers begin here:
1. The dignity of each planet. A planet weak in the birth chart but well placed in the Navamsa (own sign or exalted) usually recovers and gives better results than expected, often later in life. A planet that looks strong in the D1 but is debilitated in the D9 may promise more than it delivers. This is why astrologers rarely judge a planet from the main chart alone.
2. Venus and the 7th house of the Navamsa. The D9 is the classic chart for marriage and partnership. The condition of Venus, the 7th house of the Navamsa and its lord describe the nature of the relationship and, traditionally, the spouse. Jupiter is also read here, especially in a woman's chart in traditional texts. For the full timing picture, see When will I get married?
3. The Navamsa Lagna and its lord. This shows your inner nature and the person you grow into. Many astrologers feel the D9 becomes more visible after the mid-30s, as life experience brings out the deeper chart.
4. Your dasha lords. When you enter a new mahadasha, check where its planet sits in the Navamsa. A dasha lord that is dignified in the D9 tends to give a more fruitful period.
Common myths about the Navamsa
"The Navamsa shows exactly who you'll marry." It describes qualities and the nature of the partnership, not a name, a face or a date. Timing always comes from dashas and transits.
"A debilitated planet in the D9 ruins everything." No. One placement is one input. Neecha bhanga (cancellation of debilitation), aspects and the planet's role in your birth chart all change the picture.
"You can read the Navamsa without the birth chart." The D9 refines the birth chart; it never replaces it. Always read them together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the D9 chart used for?
Mainly for marriage and partnerships, the true strength of each planet, dharma (life purpose) and the results you see in the second half of life.
How accurate does my birth time need to be for the Navamsa?
Quite accurate. The Navamsa ascendant changes roughly every 13 minutes, so a time that is off by 15 to 30 minutes can change it. Planet signs in the D9 are far less sensitive.
What does vargottama mean?
A planet (or the ascendant) that falls in the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa. It's considered strong and reliable in its results.
Is the Navamsa more important than the birth chart?
No. The birth chart is the foundation, and the Navamsa refines it. Astrologers read the two side by side.
