Raja Yoga in Your Kundli: What It Means and How to Check for It
By Miss Astroglow · October 7, 2026 · 3 min read
"Do I have Raja yoga?" is one of the most searched questions in Vedic astrology. Raja means king, and these yogas are linked with rise, status, authority and success. The good news: most charts have at least one. The real question is how strong it is and when it switches on.
What is Raja yoga?
The classic rule is simple: a lord of a kendra (angle) joins with a lord of a trikona (trine).
- Kendras are houses 1, 4, 7 and 10, the pillars of the chart. They give power and action.
- Trikonas are houses 1, 5 and 9, the houses of luck, merit and grace.
When the planets that rule these two groups connect, effort meets luck. That's Raja yoga.

How the lords "connect"
A kendra lord and a trikona lord form Raja yoga when they:
- Sit together in the same sign (conjunction),
- Aspect each other (for example, both 7 signs apart),
- Exchange signs (each sits in the other's sign, called parivartana).
Conjunction and exchange are usually considered the strongest.
Common types of Raja yoga
| Type | How it forms |
|---|---|
| 9th + 10th lord | The lords of luck and career join. Often called the best Raja yoga for career and status (Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga). |
| Yogakaraka planet | One planet rules both a kendra and a trikona, so it forms Raja yoga on its own: Saturn for Taurus and Libra ascendants, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. |
| Viparita Raja yoga | Lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th (difficult houses) sit in each other's houses. Success that comes through a crisis, or after others stumble. |
| Gaja Kesari yoga | Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon. Not a Raja yoga in the strict sense, but a close cousin linked with respect and wisdom. |
Why doesn't my Raja yoga seem to work?
Because a yoga is a promise, not a guarantee. It delivers fully only when:
- the planets are strong, not debilitated, combust or badly afflicted,
- they aren't also ruling difficult houses in a way that spoils them,
- the right dasha runs. A Raja yoga between the 9th and 10th lords mostly shows its results in the mahadasha or antardasha of one of those planets,
- and it's supported in the Navamsa (D9).
That's why two people with "the same" yoga can have very different lives.
Frequently asked questions
How common is Raja yoga?
Very. Most charts have at least one kendra-trikona link. Strength and timing matter far more than whether it exists.
Does Raja yoga mean I'll be rich or famous?
Not necessarily. It points to rise and recognition in your own field and setting. For wealth, astrologers look separately at Dhana yogas (the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th lords).
At what age does Raja yoga give results?
When the dasha of the planets involved runs, which can come early, late, or not at all in a lifetime. Check your own dasha timeline in your free chart.
Is Viparita Raja yoga good?
It can be very good. It often shows as gains after a setback, winning against competitors, or rising after a difficult period.
