The 2nd House in Vedic Astrology: Wealth, Family and Speech
By Miss Astroglow · October 3, 2026 · 4 min read
"Will I ever have savings?" "Why does money come in and go straight out?" "Why do I clash with my family over food and words?" A Vedic astrologer looks at one house for all three: your 2nd house, called dhana bhava, the house of wealth.
What the 2nd house rules
- Accumulated wealth: savings, bank balance, gold and jewellery, assets you keep (income itself is the 11th)
- Family (kutumba): the family you grow up in and the household you build
- Speech: how you talk, sing and persuade, and whether your words are sweet or sharp
- Food and the mouth: eating habits, the face, teeth and right eye
- Values: what you hold precious and the early learning you received at home
To find it, get your free Vedic birth chart and count two signs from your ascendant (Lagna). In a North Indian chart it's the triangle at the top left, just next to the top diamond.

Three things to read together
- The sign on the 2nd and planets in it. An earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) tends to save steadily; a fire sign earns and spends boldly; a water sign spends on family and comfort.
- The 2nd lord. Where the ruler of the 2nd sits shows where your money comes from and where it goes. A 2nd lord in the 10th earns through career; in the 12th, money flows out to travel, charity or foreign places.
- Jupiter, the dhana karaka. Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth for everyone, with Venus for luxury. A strong Jupiter protects savings even when the 2nd house is busy.
Planets in the 2nd house
| Planet in 2nd | What it tends to show |
|---|---|
| Sun | Earnings tied to status or government; a proud, authoritative voice; ego clashes in the family |
| Moon | Money that rises and falls with emotions; a soft, pleasing voice; strong attachment to the mother's family |
| Mars | Sharp, direct speech; earnings through property, engineering or courage; spending fast |
| Mercury | Money from trade, writing, numbers and talking; a clever, witty voice |
| Jupiter | The classic wealth placement: wise speech, a respected family, steady savings |
| Venus | Sweet voice, love of fine food, jewellery and beauty; money through arts or luxury |
| Saturn | Slow, careful saving that becomes solid later in life; a serious voice; family duty |
| Rahu | Unusual or foreign sources of money; exaggerated speech; unconventional food habits |
| Ketu | Detachment from money; blunt or few words; sudden gains and losses |
As with every house, one placement never decides your finances. The 2nd lord, Jupiter and the running dasha matter far more.
Dhana yoga: the wealth combinations
The best-known wealth yogas link the 2nd lord (saved wealth) and the 11th lord (income and gains) with each other or with the lords of the trines (1st, 5th, 9th). When the 2nd and 11th lords sit together, aspect each other or exchange signs, money tends to come in and stay. Jupiter or Venus joining the combination strengthens it. Is an empty 2nd house bad?
No. Most charts have several empty houses. An empty 2nd simply means the 2nd lord and Jupiter tell the money story. Plenty of wealthy people have no planets in the 2nd at all.
How astrologers time money
Astrologers look for:
- the dasha or sub-period of the 2nd lord, the 11th lord, a planet in the 2nd, or Jupiter,
- Jupiter's transit over the 2nd or 11th house from the ascendant or the Moon (from late October 2026, Jupiter in Leo transits the 2nd for Cancer and the 11th for Libra ascendants and Moons; see Jupiter in Leo 2026 by Moon sign),
- Saturn's transit supporting the same houses, the "double transit" that also times career and marriage.
Sade Sati also matters: its last phase is Saturn transiting the 2nd from the Moon, often a time to tighten the budget and build savings slowly.
Frequently asked questions
Which house is for money in Vedic astrology?
The 2nd house shows accumulated wealth and savings, the 11th shows income and gains, and the 10th shows career. Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth.
What does the 2nd lord in the 12th house mean?
Money tends to flow out, to travel, foreign places, hospitals, spiritual causes or charity. It often suits people who earn or spend abroad. A strong Jupiter or a good dasha can still give solid savings.
Which planet in the 2nd house is best for wealth?
Jupiter is classically the best, followed by a well-placed Venus or Mercury. Saturn gives slow but lasting wealth.
Does the 2nd house show family?
Yes. It shows the family you are raised in and the household you build, which is why money matters and family matters are often tied together.
