Sun Mahadasha: 6 Years of Career, Authority, Father and Self-Belief
By Miss Astroglow · October 23, 2026 · 5 min read
The Sun's dasha is the shortest of the nine, and often the most visible. Surya is the planet of the self, authority, career, government, the father, and health, so its 6 years tend to ask one question again and again: who are you, and will you stand behind it? People get promoted, step into leadership, build a name, and sometimes clash with bosses or fathers along the way.
Here's what Sun mahadasha really is, who tends to shine in it, and how each sub-period usually feels.
What is Sun mahadasha?
In Vimshottari dasha, life moves through nine planetary periods in a fixed 120-year cycle. The Sun gets 6 years. It comes right after Venus's 20 years and is followed by the Moon's 10 years.
If your Moon was born in Krittika, Uttara Phalguni or Uttara Ashadha (the three nakshatras the Sun rules), you began life in Sun dasha. Everyone else meets it later. What Sun dasha usually brings
Common themes people describe:
- Career and recognition. Promotions, leadership roles, a public profile, or finally getting credit for work you've done for years.
- Government and authority. Government jobs, licences, official paperwork, politics, and dealings with people in power.
- Father and mentors. Your father's health or career, or your relationship with him, often comes into focus. So do bosses and mentors.
- Self-definition. A stronger sense of purpose. Many people stop asking for permission in this period.
- The hard side. Ego clashes, pride, conflict with authority, and burnout. Health themes are the heart, eyes, bones, and energy levels.
Who does best in Sun mahadasha?
- Leo ascendant. The Sun is your Lagna lord, so the period is about you: health, confidence, and personal rise.
- Aries and Sagittarius ascendants. The Sun rules a trikona (the 5th or the 9th house) for these charts, which usually makes it a helpful dasha for children, luck, and higher learning.
- Sun in Aries (exalted) or Leo (own sign). Usually strong: authority comes naturally. Sun in Libra is debilitated, so confidence may need building and partnerships can drain you, unless the debility is cancelled.
- Sun in the 10th house (it has digbala, directional strength, there) or in the 3rd, 6th or 11th. Classically good for career and winning.
- Sun with Mercury (Budha-Aditya yoga) often helps intelligence and business. Sun with Saturn or Rahu can bring friction with authority or the father, so pick your battles.
Check the house the Sun sits in, the house it rules for your ascendant, and its strength in the Navamsa. A planet very close to the Sun is combust and may give weaker results in its own sub-period.
The antardashas of Sun mahadasha
Each mahadasha splits into nine sub-periods (antardashas), starting with the main planet's own. Length = 6 × the sub-planet's years ÷ 120 (a year counted as 12 months of 30 days):
| Antardasha | Length | How it often feels |
|---|---|---|
| Sun / Sun | 3 months, 18 days | The Sun at full strength: visibility, confidence, and ego tests |
| Sun / Moon | 6 months | Home, mother, and the public; a softer, more emotional stretch |
| Sun / Mars | 4 months, 6 days | Energy, courage, and property; strong drive, short tempers |
| Sun / Rahu | 10 months, 24 days | Often the hardest: ambition mixed with confusion, health dips, and clashes with authority |
| Sun / Jupiter | 9 months, 18 days | Often the best: blessings, teachers, children, and respected roles |
| Sun / Saturn | 11 months, 12 days | Father-son planets that don't get along: pressure at work, delays, and hard lessons about duty |
| Sun / Mercury | 10 months, 6 days | Business, writing, and skills; Budha-Aditya results if they're joined in your chart |
| Sun / Ketu | 4 months, 6 days | Detachment and sudden changes; a good time to rest and look inward |
| Sun / Venus | 1 year | Comfort, relationships, and luxury; a gentle finish before the Moon's dasha |
The "how it feels" column describes common tendencies. Your own antardashas depend on how each planet relates to the Sun and which houses both rule in your chart.
Practical ways to work with the Sun
The Sun rewards discipline and generosity:
- Rise with the sun. Watching or greeting the sunrise, and offering water to the Sun (Surya arghya), is the most classic Sun practice.
- Chant on Sundays. Many people recite the Aditya Hridayam or "Om Suryaya Namah", or do Surya Namaskar.
- Honour your father and mentors, even when it's hard. Sun periods tend to mirror how we treat authority.
- Lead, don't dominate. Take the role, and share the credit.
- Look after your heart, eyes, and bones. Regular check-ups and some morning sunlight are good Sun medicine.
- Give wheat, jaggery, or copper on Sundays, or help someone without expecting credit.
