Venus Mahadasha (Shukra Dasha): Love, Money and Comfort for 20 Years
Venus mahadasha has a lovely reputation, and much of it is earned. At 20 years, it's the longest period in the Vimshottari system, and for many people it brings marriage, a home, creative work, better finances and simply more ease in daily life. But Venus is also the planet of desire, and a long period of comfort has its own lessons.
Here is what Shukra mahadasha really is, who it tends to favour, and how each sub-period usually feels.
What is Venus mahadasha?
In Vimshottari dasha, life moves through nine planetary periods in a fixed 120-year cycle. Venus has the longest share: 20 years. It comes right after Ketu's 7-year period and is followed by the Sun's 6-year period.
If your Moon was born in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purva Ashadha (the three nakshatras ruled by Venus), you began life in Venus dasha, so your childhood and teens ran on Venus. Everyone else meets it later, and some people never reach it. To see exactly where you are, enter your details in the free Vedic birth chart; it shows your current mahadasha and antardasha with dates. Not sure which nakshatra your Moon is in? What Venus dasha usually brings
Venus (Shukra) rules love, marriage, beauty, art, music, pleasure, vehicles, luxury and diplomacy (in the myths, Shukra is also the teacher of the asuras). In its period, those themes move to the front.
Common themes people describe:
- Relationships. Venus is the karaka (natural significator) of marriage for everyone. Engagements, weddings and deepening partnerships are classic Venus-dasha events, especially in its sub-periods linked to the 7th house.
- Money and comfort. A nicer home, a car, better clothes, more travel for pleasure. Income often rises, and so can spending.
- Creativity. Art, design, fashion, beauty, hospitality, film, music and anything that makes life pleasant are Venus fields. Many people start a creative side business in this period.
- Social ease. More invitations, more charm, smoother negotiations.
The lesson side: Venus can pull toward indulgence, people-pleasing or choosing comfort over growth. Twenty years is long enough that what you enjoy daily becomes who you are.
Who does Venus mahadasha favour?
Classically, Venus gives its best when it is strong and well placed in your chart:
- In its own signs, Taurus and Libra, or exalted in Pisces.
- For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, Venus rules both a kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine), which makes it a yogakaraka, often the best planet in the chart. Its dasha can be a peak of life.
- For Taurus and Libra ascendants, Venus is the Lagna lord, so its period tends to lift health, confidence and status.
- In a kendra or trikona, aspected by Jupiter, or vargottama (same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa).
Venus is debilitated in Virgo, and the dasha can feel more mixed when Venus is weak, combust (too close to the Sun) or afflicted. Even then, cancellation of debilitation (neecha bhanga) and a strong Navamsa placement can change the picture a lot, so don't judge it from one rule.
The antardashas of Venus mahadasha
Each mahadasha splits into nine sub-periods (antardashas), starting with the main planet's own. Length = 20 ร the sub-planet's years รท 120. Venus's numbers come out neatly to whole months:
| Antardasha | Length | How it often feels |
|---|---|---|
| Venus / Venus | 3 years, 4 months | Venus themes at full strength: love, comfort, creativity, spending |
| Venus / Sun | 1 year | Status, government or father matters; some ego friction in relationships |
| Venus / Moon | 1 year, 8 months | Emotional, family and home life; mother, property, public popularity |
| Venus / Mars | 1 year, 2 months | Passion and drive; property and siblings; watch impulsive spending and arguments |
| Venus / Rahu | 3 years | Ambition, foreign links, unconventional choices; exciting but can feel restless |
| Venus / Jupiter | 2 years, 8 months | Wisdom, children, teachers, faith; two benefics with different values, so often growth with a few inner tugs |
| Venus / Saturn | 3 years, 2 months | Frequently excellent: Venus and Saturn are friends. Steady career and lasting gains |
| Venus / Mercury | 2 years, 10 months | Business, writing, trade, study; usually smooth, as Mercury is Venus's friend |
| Venus / Ketu | 1 year, 2 months | Detachment and a spiritual turn; endings that clear space before the Sun's dasha |
The "how it feels" column describes common tendencies. Your own antardashas depend on how each planet relates to Venus and which houses both rule in your chart.
Venus dasha and marriage timing
People often ask whether Venus dasha "means" marriage. It raises the odds, but timing in Jyotish always combines the dasha with the 7th house, its lord, the Navamsa and the double transit of Jupiter and Saturn. The full method is in When will I get married?. If you are already married, Venus periods more often show up as a home, children's milestones, shared money or simply more warmth.
Practical ways to work with Shukra
Venus responds to beauty, gratitude and balance rather than more and more consumption. Traditional and practical supports include:
- Keep it beautiful, not excessive. A clean, pleasant home, good grooming, music or art every week.
- Respect in relationships. Venus is said to strengthen when you honour your partner and the women in your life.
- Fridays. Many people wear white or light colours on Friday, offer white flowers or sweets, or chant "Om Shum Shukraya Namah".
- Generosity. Giving rice, sugar, white cloth or perfume, or supporting artists and young women's education.
- A budget. The most practical Venus remedy of all: enjoy, but know your numbers.
Please don't wear a diamond or white sapphire for Venus without a full chart reading. Strengthening a planet only helps when that planet is a friend to your ascendant.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Venus mahadasha?
20 years, the longest of the nine Vimshottari dashas. It splits into nine antardashas, from Venus/Venus (3 years, 4 months) to Venus/Ketu (1 year, 2 months).
Is Venus mahadasha always good?
Often, but not always. For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants Venus is a yogakaraka and its dasha is usually excellent. A debilitated, combust or afflicted Venus can bring overspending or relationship lessons instead.
Which antardasha is best in Venus mahadasha?
Venus/Saturn and Venus/Mercury are classically among the smoothest, since Saturn and Mercury are friends of Venus, but your own chart decides.

The Sun's mahadasha, which lasts 6 years and usually brings career, authority and self-definition to the front.
