What Is My Nakshatra? All 27 Nakshatras Explained
If you have ever been asked "what is your star?" by an Indian grandmother, she was not asking about your Sun sign. She meant your nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon was sitting in at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), it is one of the most personal details in your whole chart, more intimate even than your Moon sign.
Let me walk you through what a nakshatra is, how yours is found, and what each of the 27 means. If you just want the answer, the free nakshatra calculator will tell you yours in a few seconds.
What is a nakshatra?
The zodiac is a 360° circle. Western and Vedic astrology both divide it into 12 signs of 30° each. Vedic astrology adds a second, finer division: 27 nakshatras of 13°20' each. Because the Moon travels roughly 13° a day, it spends about one day in each nakshatra, which is why ancient astrologers called them the Moon's "houses" or "mansions".
Each nakshatra has:
- A ruling planet (one of nine: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, repeating three times around the zodiac).
- A presiding deity whose myth colours its meaning.
- A symbol, a gana (temperament: divine, human or rakshasa) and a yoni (animal nature), which matter in compatibility matching.
- Four padas (quarters) of 3°20' each, which fine-tune it further.
Your janma nakshatra (birth star) is the one holding your Moon. It shapes your emotional instincts, and it also sets the starting point of your Vimshottari dasha, the planetary timeline astrologers use to time events in your life.
Why the sidereal zodiac matters here
Nakshatras are measured in the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual background stars. The tropical zodiac most Western horoscopes use has drifted away from those stars by about 24° because of the precession of the equinoxes. The amount of that drift is called the ayanamsa, and the most widely used value in India is the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, roughly 24°13' in 2026. Every calculation on this site uses Lahiri.
That is why you cannot find your nakshatra from a newspaper horoscope. You need the Moon's exact position at your birth, which needs your date, place and ideally your time.
How to find your nakshatra
- Enter your birth date, time and city into the nakshatra calculator.
- It computes the Moon's sidereal longitude with the NASA JPL ephemeris and Lahiri ayanamsa.
- It divides that longitude by 13°20' to find your nakshatra and pada.
A birth time matters more than people expect. The Moon can cross from one nakshatra to the next on the very day you were born, so if you don't know your time, treat the result as "probably" and look at the neighbouring star too.

How astrologers use your nakshatra
- Personality and emotions: your birth star describes your instinctive emotional style even more precisely than your Moon sign.
- Timing: the ruler of your nakshatra is the first mahadasha of your life. If your Moon is in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha, for example, you were born in a Rahu mahadasha.
- Compatibility: four of the eight Ashtakoota factors (Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi) depend on the two partners' nakshatras, and the other four on their Moon signs. Try the guna milan calculator.
- Names and muhurta: each pada has a traditional starting syllable for baby names, and nakshatras are used to choose auspicious dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is my nakshatra the same as my zodiac sign?
No. Your zodiac sign is one of 12 divisions of 30°. Your nakshatra is one of 27 divisions of 13°20', and it is based on where your Moon was, not your Sun.
Can I find my nakshatra without a birth time?
Usually, yes. The Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra, so a date and place often give the right answer. If the Moon changed nakshatra on your birthday, you need your time to be sure.
Which nakshatra is the best?
None is "best". Pushya is traditionally called the most auspicious for beginning things, but every nakshatra has gifts and lessons.
What is my nakshatra pada?
The pada is the quarter (3°20') of the nakshatra the Moon occupied. The nakshatra calculator shows it along with your nakshatra.
