The 7th house (kalatra bhava, sometimes yuvati bhava) covers every one-to-one bond in your life:
- Marriage and your spouse, their nature and how the two of you relate.
- Business partners and contracts, anyone you sign with as an equal.
- The public, clients, and how you deal with people face to face.
- Travel and life away from home, in older texts.

Three things to read together
- The sign on the 7th house. It sets the tone of partnership. Fire signs bring passion and independence, earth signs loyalty and practicality, air signs friendship and talk, water signs emotional depth.
- The 7th lord, the planet that rules that sign. Where it sits tells you where you're likely to meet your partner and what the marriage revolves around. For example, a 7th lord in the 10th often links marriage with career or a partner met through work.
- The marriage significators. Venus is the natural karaka of love and marriage for everyone, and many astrologers also read Jupiter as the significator of the husband in a woman's chart.

None of these work alone. A Saturn in the 7th with a strong Jupiter aspect reads very differently from a Saturn hemmed in by Mars and Rahu.
Is an empty 7th house bad?
No. Most charts have several empty houses. An empty 7th house just means the 7th lord and Venus do the talking. Plenty of happily married people have nothing in the 7th.

A good 7th house is the promise. The timing usually comes from:
- the dasha or sub-period of the 7th lord, Venus, or a planet in the 7th,
- Jupiter's transit over the 7th house, the 7th lord, or Venus,
- and Saturn's transit supporting the same houses.
