The 10th House in Vedic Astrology: Career, Status and Your Life's Work

By Miss Astroglow · October 25, 2026 · 4 min read

"What career is right for me?" and "When will I get a job?" are two of the questions people ask an astrologer most. The first place a Vedic astrologer looks for both is your 10th house, the highest point of your chart.

What the 10th house rules

The 10th house (karma bhava, the house of action) covers your public life:

  • Career and profession, the work you're known for.
  • Status and reputation, promotions, titles and recognition.
  • Authority, your boss, the government, and how you handle power yourself.
  • Your life's purpose, what you build and leave behind.

To find it, get your free Vedic birth chart and count ten signs from your ascendant (Lagna). In a North Indian chart it's the diamond on the right-hand side, level with the centre.

Three things to read together

  1. The sign on the 10th house. It sets the style of your work. Fire signs like to lead and start things, earth signs build steadily and handle money and systems, air signs work with ideas, people and communication, water signs with care, healing and intuition.
  2. The 10th lord, the planet that rules that sign. Where it sits often points to the field. A 10th lord in the 7th suggests business, partnerships or client work; in the 9th, teaching, law or work abroad; in the 12th, foreign companies, hospitals or behind-the-scenes roles.
  3. The career significators. The Sun (authority), Mercury (skill and commerce), Jupiter (knowledge and advice) and Saturn (hard work and service) are all read for career. Saturn is the natural karaka of the 10th house.

Then confirm it in the Dashamsha (D10), the divisional chart astrologers use specifically for career, much as the Navamsa (D9) is used for marriage.

Planets in the 10th house

Planet in the 10thHow it tends to show
SunDirectional strength. Leadership, government or senior roles, and a strong drive for recognition.
MoonPublic-facing work: hospitality, care, sales, media. Career may change with life phases.
MarsDirectional strength. Engineering, surgery, police, the military, sport, real estate; a fighter at work.
MercuryWriting, analysis, tech, accounting, trading, consulting; often more than one line of work.
JupiterTeaching, law, finance, advisory and spiritual roles; respected for judgment.
VenusDesign, fashion, arts, beauty, luxury, entertainment and diplomacy.
SaturnSlow, steady rise through discipline. Big roles often come after 36; avoid shortcuts.
RahuSudden rises, tech, foreign companies and unconventional fields; ambition runs high.
KetuResearch, coding, healing or spiritual work; may feel detached from titles.

None of these work alone. Aspects, the sign, and the strength of the 10th lord change the picture a lot.

Is an empty 10th house bad?

No. An empty 10th house is completely normal. It simply means the 10th lord and the career significators do the talking. Many successful people have nothing in the 10th.

How astrologers time career changes

A strong 10th house is the promise. Timing usually comes from:

  • the dasha or sub-period of the 10th lord, a planet in the 10th, or the lord of the 6th (jobs) or 11th (gains),
  • Jupiter's transit over the 10th house or its lord, which often brings offers and promotions,
  • Saturn's transit through the 10th, which brings more responsibility and pressure, and rewards patient work.

If you're in a Saturn mahadasha or Sun mahadasha, career themes tend to be front and centre.

Frequently asked questions

Which house shows career in Vedic astrology?

The 10th house, read with its lord, the Sun, Saturn and the Dashamsha (D10). The 6th house (daily work and jobs) and 2nd and 11th houses (income and gains) support it.

Which planet in the 10th house is best for career?

The Sun and Mars get directional strength (dig bala) in the 10th, so both are considered powerful there. Jupiter and Mercury are also excellent. What matters most is how strong and well-placed the planet is.

Can my chart tell me the exact job I should do?

It shows the field and style of work that suits you, not a single job title. Two people with the same 10th house can be a surgeon and a chef: both work with sharp tools and heat.

When will I get a job according to astrology?

Look for the dasha of the 10th, 6th or 11th lord running with Jupiter transiting your 10th house or its lord. Ask about your own chart below.
