Ketu mahadasha has a reputation for loss, confusion and sudden endings, and people who are about to enter it often feel nervous. The truth is more interesting. Ketu is the planet of detachment, insight and liberation, and its 7 years tend to strip away what no longer fits so that something truer can grow in the long Venus period that follows.

What is Ketu mahadasha?

In Vimshottari dasha, life moves through nine planetary periods in a fixed 120-year cycle. Ketu's share is 7 years. It comes right after Mercury's 17-year period and is followed by Venus's 20 years, the longest dasha of all.

What Ketu dasha usually brings

Ketu is the south node of the Moon, a shadow planet with no sign of its own. In the myths it is the headless body of the demon Svarbhanu: all instinct and past skill, no appetite for more. Where Rahu wants, Ketu lets go.

• Detachment. Goals that drove you for years suddenly feel flat. Many people change careers, cities or circles in this period.
• Spiritual pull. Meditation, pilgrimage, astrology, healing, research and quiet study often become important. Ketu is the moksha karaka, the significator of liberation.

• Ketu in the 12th house is often called excellent for spiritual life, foreign settlement and inner peace.
• A strong sign lord. If the planet ruling Ketu's sign is well placed, Ketu's period tends to go smoothly.
• Ketu with or aspected by Jupiter often gives wisdom and a gentle spiritual turn.

Ketu is commonly taken as exalted in Scorpio and debilitated in Taurus (some traditions use Sagittarius and Gemini instead). • Ganesha. Ketu is linked to Lord Ganesha; many people chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" or "Om Kem Ketave Namah", especially on Tuesdays or Saturdays.
• Let go on purpose. Declutter, finish old projects, forgive old debts. Ketu is kinder when you release things before it does.
• Serve. Feeding stray dogs, supporting the sick or helping at a temple are classic Ketu offerings.
