Moon Mahadasha: 10 Years of Emotion, Home, Mother and Public Life
In Vedic astrology the Moon is the mind (manas). So when its mahadasha starts, life tends to be felt more than thought through. Home, mother, emotions, food, rest, and how the public sees you all move to the centre. For 10 years your inner weather shapes your outer life more than usual.
Here's what Chandra dasha really is, who tends to thrive in it, and how each sub-period usually feels.
What is Moon mahadasha?
In Vimshottari dasha, life moves through nine planetary periods in a fixed 120-year cycle. The Moon gets 10 years. It comes right after the Sun's 6-year period and is followed by Mars's 7 years.
If your Moon was born in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana (the three nakshatras the Moon rules), you began life in Moon dasha, so part of your early childhood ran on it. Everyone else meets it later. What Moon dasha usually brings
Common themes people describe:
- Home and family. Moving house, buying property, renovating, marriage, or having a baby are all common. So is a closer (or more complicated) relationship with your mother.
- Feelings turned up. You feel things more strongly: more intuitive and caring, but also more easily hurt and more prone to mood swings.
- Public life. The Moon rules the masses. Jobs that deal with people (hospitality, healthcare, teaching, sales, food, media, social content) often grow in this period.
- Travel and water. Short trips, living near water, and moving abroad are classic Moon-period stories.
- Health tied to stress. Sleep, digestion, hormones, and fluid balance tend to reflect how you feel emotionally.
Who does best in Moon mahadasha?
The Moon changes quickly, so its condition in your chart matters a lot:
- A bright (waxing) Moon. In Jyotish a Moon close to full is strong and kind. A Moon born near the new Moon is weaker, so the period can feel more anxious until you build routines that support you.
- Moon in Taurus (exalted) or Cancer (own sign). Usually a comfortable decade. Moon in Scorpio is debilitated, which often brings deeper emotional lessons and real transformation.
- Cancer ascendant. The Moon is your Lagna lord, so its dasha is about you: your health, your identity, and fresh starts. It is also important for Scorpio and Pisces rising, where it rules the 9th and 5th houses (luck and children).
- Moon with Jupiter (Gaja Kesari yoga) or aspected by Jupiter often brings respect, wisdom, and steady growth.
- Moon with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn can make the mind restless or heavy. That isn't a bad decade, but rest and routine become non-negotiable.
As always, don't judge from one rule. Check the house the Moon sits in, the houses it rules for your ascendant, and its strength in the Navamsa.
The antardashas of Moon mahadasha
Each mahadasha splits into nine sub-periods (antardashas), starting with the main planet's own. Length = 10 ร the sub-planet's years รท 120 (a year counted as 12 months of 30 days):
| Antardasha | Length | How it often feels |
|---|---|---|
| Moon / Moon | 10 months | The Moon at full strength: home, mother, feelings, and new routines |
| Moon / Mars | 7 months | Chandra-Mangala energy: drive, property, and money-making. Also quicker tempers |
| Moon / Rahu | 1 year, 6 months | Often the most unsettled stretch: big desires, foreign links, worry. Ground yourself daily |
| Moon / Jupiter | 1 year, 4 months | Frequently the best: blessings, children, teachers, faith, and growth |
| Moon / Saturn | 1 year, 7 months | Heavier and slower: duty, older relatives, hard work. Steady effort pays off |
| Moon / Mercury | 1 year, 5 months | Learning, business, writing, and communication. Mercury treats the Moon as an enemy, so overthinking is the trap |
| Moon / Ketu | 7 months | Detachment and inward focus; a good time for spiritual practice. Avoid big emotional decisions |
| Moon / Venus | 1 year, 8 months | Comfort, love, beauty, vehicles, and money; often sweet |
| Moon / Sun | 6 months | Father, authority, and visibility; a confident finish before Mars dasha |
The "how it feels" column describes common tendencies. Your own antardashas depend on how each planet relates to the Moon and which houses both rule in your chart.
Practical ways to work with the Moon
The Moon responds to care, rhythm, and calm rather than force:
- Protect your sleep. Regular bedtimes do more for a Moon period than any gemstone.
- Honour your mother (or mother figures). Calling, visiting, and helping her is the classic Chandra remedy.
- Mondays. Many people fast, wear white, or chant "Om Som Somaya Namah" or "Om Chandraya Namah" on Mondays. Shiva worship is traditionally linked to the Moon.
- Water and white foods. Drink enough water. Offering milk, rice, or water to those in need is a traditional Moon offering.
- Journal. Writing feelings down keeps a Moon period from turning into rumination.
- Get support. If anxiety or low mood lasts, talk to a doctor or therapist. Astrology is not a substitute for medical or mental-health care.
Please don't wear a pearl without a full chart reading. It suits some ascendants and can make others more emotional.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Moon mahadasha?
10 years. It splits into nine antardashas, from Moon/Sun (6 months) to Moon/Venus (1 year, 8 months).
Is Moon mahadasha good or bad?
It depends on the Moon in your chart. A bright, well-placed Moon (especially in Taurus or Cancer, or with Jupiter) usually gives a comfortable, family-centred decade. A weak or afflicted Moon brings more emotional lessons, but rarely a "bad" period overall.
Which antardasha is best in Moon mahadasha?
Moon/Jupiter and Moon/Venus are often the smoothest. Moon/Rahu and Moon/Saturn usually ask for the most patience.
What comes after Moon mahadasha?
Mars mahadasha (7 years), which shifts the mood from feeling to action: energy, courage, property, and competition. Read the Mars mahadasha guide.
